Carter is a character I played in a short Mothership campaign - DM: Josef Stark.
Carter Grey was born and raised in a human colony that has been stranded on a moon for a few decades. It is situated in a galaxy around a red star that mysteriously disables the hyperdrive of any ship unlucky enough to cross through it - and that is how the rest of the party ends up there. They are surrounded with shipwrecks, and disabled ships drifting helplessly through space. Carter's colony has been surviving by scavenging the remains of their own crashed ship on the moon. They have also repurposed a pulley system meant to be used to tow other ships by their own, to harpoon wrecks that pass by and get more supplies this way.
All of this led to the colony having a very strange culture, one in which waste is not acceptable, and almost every espect of life is heavily regulated, for the survival of all. No idle hands either...
That is the environment that Carter grew up in. Due to his natural curiosity and affinity for tinkering, he got assigned to the Shipbreakers, the people who scavenge around the moon and bring materials and supplies they find to the colony. His eye and leg missing are not due to an accident, but were given to the colony as a whole for consumption, as a rite that everyone has to go through. It is not a rule per se, but usually the more a person gives up, the higher they are regarded within the colony. His prosthetic leg is made from an repurposed android's leg frame.
During the campaign, he acts as a guide into the colony's culture for the party, and they teach him about the 'real' world. when shit hits the fan as it always does in a Mothership campaign, he ends up joining the crew and escapes the colony overrun with monsters with them. He then works in tandem with Hector, the crew engineer, to finish repairing a stranded ship and escape with it - and by escape, I mean getting into cryo pods, setting off at regular speed in A Direction and hoping to get rescued at some point, preferably before the cryo pods run out of power.
